Wrong Number? NAAAAA!

For the first year or two after moving into my current home, I got wrong numbers on a daily basis. It was usually an older sounding woman and she always asked for the same man. I've always had the terrible feeling she was looking for her son, or something like that, so I tried to be as nice to her as I could, patiently telling her every day that he didn't live here. I was just getting used to this daily irritation when someone else called, asking for the same person. This time it sounded like a young man, maybe a friend of the person in question. I told him he had the wrong number, but got a response I never would have expected. "No I don't!" . . . . Seriously, I'd think he could take my word for it. I should know who lives in my own home! Unfortunately, I never had a chance to make all the impolite replies I had burning in my brain, because he did what may have been the smartest thing he'd done all day. He hung up the phone. I never heard from him again, but the older woman continued calling for a while before the calls tapered off. I'll always regret that missed opportunity.
