Patch Together, What and Why?

By Scott Ryan

Not long ago I began uploading designs to a website called Patch Together.(http://patchtogether.com/?Member_Profile&Id=7667) I immediately began directing family, friends, and other acquaintances to the site in an attempt to gather votes and comments on my designs, but to a great extent got back little more than confusion about what it was all about and why I bothered sending them there. Seems they don't do a very good job of explaining exactly what it is they do, although I somehow managed to work it out. Instead of re-explaining this to them over and over again, I thought it would be simpler to write up a complete explanation here and just direct them to it each time.

After making an account you upload design ideas for toys or figurines (vinyl, plush, or resin) and submit them for voting. Each vote includes a ranking from one to five and if you get enough votes with a high enough rating your design will be selected for "Product On Demand" status. Exactly how many votes it takes or what your rating has to be has never been clearly explained so far as I can tell, but they were a little more explicit with Product On Demand.

Product On Demand means that they make it available for orders, even if they haven't actually created the item itself. If there are fifty or more orders placed on it will go into production. Unless it's vinyl, in which case I understand it takes 1000. (http://patchtogether.com/?Blogs&discuss=266)

As the designer, you retain the rights to your idea, although you do enter a one year exclusive toy contract and you will receive 40% of the profits. I've seen a lot of online cartoonists submitting their characters to Patch Together. Unless you're already making toys some other way, there doesn't seem to be anything to loose. I know a lot of creative and artistic people who could use a new source of income these days and have been trying to get them to take an interest in this. Perhaps are one as well or know a few.
