Getting A Head in Maya (Part 4: Put a Lid On It)
By Scott Ryan
Unless you’re modeling Marty Feldman, you’re going to want some lids over those eyes. Use Create Polygon Tool to outline the inner edge of the eyelids. http://www.qondio.com/img/originals/files-1/2866.jpg Select the edges and extrude them out. http://www.qondio.com/img/originals/files-1/2867.jpg Delete the interior face and translate the ring forward. Select the vertices and translate them back, fitting the geometry snugly against the eyeball without interpenetration. http://www.qondio.com/img/originals/files-1/2869.jpg Insert an edge loop within the ring and close to the inner loop. Next select the new vertices on the bottom lid one by one, snap them against the vertices on the inner edge loop, and pull them forward ever so slightly to form a little shelf. The vertices on the upper half will also be pulled forward, but farther and don’t snap them to the inner loop. Make any adjustments to vertex positioning to keep the edge flow clean and smooth. http://www.qondio.com/img/originals/files-1/2870.jpg Select the outer edges and extrude out. Pull these edges forward. Clean up the vertices extruded from the tear duct to round them out. On the top, the ring curves forward to meet the brow, on the bottom it curves forward to flow into the cheek, towards the middle it curves forward to meet the nose, and on the outside it curves back to the side of the head. So rotate the ring on the Y axis accordingly. http://www.qondio.com/img/originals/files-1/2871.jpg Extrude out again and shape the ring to match your head. http://www.qondio.com/img/originals/files-1/2872.jpg This may take some trial and error. Select the edges on top and extrude them up to the eyebrow. http://www.qondio.com/img/originals/files-1/2873.jpg Shape it so the edges curve gently from the center to the side of the head. http://www.qondio.com/img/originals/files-1/2874.jpg Extrude and pull up to the top of the head, rotating the edge so the curve matches up with the curve of the top of the head. http://www.qondio.com/img/originals/files-1/2875.jpg You may have to adjust this from the front view. Insert edge loops and adjust them to match the silhouette geometry. Smooth out the edge flow. http://www.qondio.com/img/originals/files-1/2876.jpg Check your face normals (Display: Polygons: Face Normals). They’re probably reversed. Reverse them (Normals: Reverse — turn them off the same way) and smooth them (Normals: Soften Edge). Freeze transform and delete history. Next time it’s Part 5: I Got Your Nose. |
